In September 2011 selected designs for a new National Grid pylon were exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
In May 2011 the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), together with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and National Grid, launched a competition to invite architects, designers, engineers and students of these disciplines to rethink one of the most crucial but controversial features of modern Britain: the electricity pylon. There are currently more than 88,000 pylons in the UK, including 22,000 on the National Grid’s main transmission network in England and Wales. This network of pylons and cables has the potential to transform our landscapes for good or bad, and for generations to come.
The competition aimed to help initiate and inform this debate through the vehicle of design and to explore the potential for a new generation of pylon within our landscapes.
